The Best National Football Team of All Time
There is no single answer — it depends on the measure. By World Cup titles and all-time win rate, Brazil make the strongest case (5 World Cups, 63.4% wins). By peak strength, Germany's record Elo of 2259 (2014-07) edges everyone. Here is each measure, from 49,421 international matches since 1872.
1. Most World Cup titles
| # | Team | Titles | Years |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Brazil | 5 | 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994, 2002 |
| 2 | Italy | 4 | 1934, 1938, 1982, 2006 |
| 3 | Germany | 4 | 1954, 1974, 1990, 2014 |
| 4 | Argentina | 3 | 1978, 1986, 2022 |
| 5 | Uruguay | 2 | 1930, 1950 |
| 6 | France | 2 | 1998, 2018 |
| 7 | England | 1 | 1966 |
| 8 | Spain | 1 | 2010 |
2. Highest all-time win rate
National teams with at least 300 internationals played.
| # | Team | Win rate | Record |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Brazil | 63.4% | 672 / 1,060 |
| 2 | Spain | 58.8% | 461 / 784 |
| 3 | Germany | 58.1% | 600 / 1,032 |
| 4 | England | 57.3% | 625 / 1,090 |
| 5 | Iran | 56.9% | 349 / 613 |
| 6 | Argentina | 55.4% | 592 / 1,069 |
| 7 | South Korea | 53.5% | 539 / 1,008 |
| 8 | Italy | 53.4% | 477 / 893 |
| 9 | Czech Republic | 52.9% | 191 / 361 |
| 10 | Croatia | 52.8% | 209 / 396 |
Read this one with care. Win rate partly reflects who you play. Sides from confederations with weaker average opposition — note Iran and South Korea here — can post high win rates without facing the strongest teams as often. It rewards consistency, not strength of schedule.
3. Highest peak Elo rating
Elo measures strength relative to opponents, built by replaying every match since 1872 (the same engine behind our predictions). Peak = each team's highest-ever rating.
| # | Team | Peak Elo | Reached |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Germany | 2259 | 2014-07 |
| 2 | Brazil | 2254 | 2022-11 |
| 3 | Spain | 2244 | 2025-11 |
| 4 | Argentina | 2233 | 2024-09 |
| 5 | Belgium | 2209 | 2021-06 |
| 6 | Netherlands | 2192 | 2014-07 |
| 7 | France | 2186 | 2023-11 |
| 8 | Italy | 2139 | 2021-07 |
| 9 | Colombia | 2135 | 2024-07 |
| 10 | Portugal | 2106 | 2021-06 |
So who is the best ever?
Brazil have the most complete case: the most World Cup titles (5), the highest all-time win rate (63.4%), and a peak Elo within touching distance of the record. Germany own the single highest peak (2259), and Spain and others have their eras — but no team matches Brazil across all three measures. It is the closest thing the data gives to a "best ever".
Method & caveats
Win rate and peak Elo are computed from the open martj42/international_results dataset (CC0; 49,421 matches since 1872). World Cup titles use the official champions list (penalty-decided finals can't be read from scorelines). Win rate does not adjust for opponent strength; Elo does. These are measures, not verdicts — football's "best ever" is always part argument.
